Next Game - Flinders, 8 November, Bookings Closed 8pm Thurs, 29 October (Contact the starter for late bookings)
The Club Championship is conducted over the first 11 rounds of the year, January to November. Each round is scored using Stroke, Stableford or Par scoring, as determined by the committee.
Attendance: Members earn 5 Championship points for each round they attend.
Placing bonus: Members also earn bonus points based on their finish on the day (as shown in the table).
Ties: Ties for the daily placing are decided by countback.
The Club Champion is the member with the most points at the end of the Championship. Trophies or prizes are also awarded to the members who finish second through eighth in the final Championship standings.
Members also compete for the President's Trophy, which goes to the member with the lowest average net stroke score over four nominated rounds played at various courses during the year.
The Committee nominates the four rounds.
Members must play all four to be eligible.
The Foothills Shootout is a match play competition open to members only.
Seeding and qualifying
Players are seeded by their finishing position on the previous year's Championship Ladder.
To qualify, you must play in the first round of the year (the Round 1 January round), known as the Shootout Qualifying Round.
Depending on how many members play in the Qualifying Round, elimination matches may be needed to bring the field down to the 32 players required for Round 1.
Format
Two drawn opponents play hole for hole, and each hole is won, lost, or halved based on strokes taken.
Handicaps are applied using the difference between the two players' handicaps.
Example: Player A has a handicap of 12, and Player B has a handicap of 20, so the difference is 8. Using the stroke index, Player A gives Player B one stroke on each of the holes rated 1 to 8.
Countback (if the match is halved)
The winner is the player who won the hole rated No. 1.
If that hole was halved, the No. 2 rated hole is used.
If that is also halved, continue through the remaining holes in rating order until there is a winner.
Other notes
The Shootout is played alongside the club's scheduled event (normally Stableford).
To reduce walkovers, the committee can approve Shootout matches to be played during subsequent Foothills rounds, provided they are completed before the next scheduled Shootout round. If this is not possible, the player or players unable to attend the official Shootout round will forfeit the match.
Members can play for the title of Cock of the Walk in every monthly round except Gala Day.
How it works
The Cock hits off first in the round. Their group has the Cock, two challengers and an adjudicator (usually a Committee member).
The group plays the round of the day, and the best score among the Cock and the two challengers wins.
The Cock must use the Cock Putter on holes 1, 9 and 18. If there is no Cock, all three challengers must use the Cock Putter on these holes.
The Cock must be beaten to lose the title. If the result is tied, the Cock retains the title.
Challenger rotation
Challengers are chosen by rotation through the field, so a member can expect to challenge roughly every 18 months.
A challenger who cannot play forfeits their turn and goes to the bottom of the list. The next member on the list (the emergency) takes their place.
An emergency starter who is notified and then fails to attend does not lose their position on the list.
Benefits of being the Cock
You hit off first for as long as you hold the title.
Members are expected to buy you drinks on demand.
Each December the club holds a Modified Ambrose-Stableford team event, also known as Gentsomes.
Rules
Groups of 4 (or 3) are formed, and each group nominates a captain.
The round is Stableford with a few variations.
Every player tees off. The captain, in consultation with the group, chooses one tee shot to use and marks its position.
Each player picks up their ball and, in turn, places it and plays from within one club length of the chosen tee shot (or within one scorecard width if on the green), no closer to the hole.
From there, each player plays out the hole with their own ball, as in a normal Stableford event. Only the tee shot is played Ambrose style.
Once all players have holed out, the best two Stableford scores (including the strokes) are recorded on the card identifying which players they belong to.
Each player's tee shot must be used at least 4 times per round (at least 3 times in a group of 3). This also must be marked on the card.
The team with the highest total at the end of the round wins.
The Starter rotates players through the field so that you:
Play with as many members as possible during the year, and
Get a fair spread of early and late starts.
The rotation is done manually, so mistakes can happen. If you think you are not being rotated, tell the Starter, who will try to fix it.
January to September: Fields are rotated as described above.
October and November: Playing order is based on Club Championship standings before the round. Members with the fewest points play in the first group and those with the most play in the last group. The Cock group is the exception.
Standard 18-Hole Countback Steps
If players finish with the same total score, the committee compares the scores as follows until the tie is resolved:
Last 9 holes: Compare scores on holes 10 through 18.
Last 6 holes: Compare scores on holes 13 through 18.
Last 3 holes: Compare scores on holes 16 through 18.
Final hole: Look only at the 18th hole.
Hole-by-hole: Go backward from 18 (17, then 16, etc.)
Scoring Formats
Stroke : Lowest net total score wins each segment. Partial handicaps are subtracted for partial-hole segments (half-handicap for 9 holes, one-third for 6 holes, one-sixth for 3 holes, etc.).
Stableford/Par: Highest total points wins each segment.
Note: If there is a multi-tee start, regardless of the starting hole, the last nine holes, last six holes, etc are considered to be holes 10–18, 13–18 etc
